Mondo Rescue

Mondo RescueMondoRescue is a powerful and versatile GPL Disaster Recovery solution.
It can also be used as a cloning solution including the realisation of P2P, V2V, P2V or V2P migrations.

MondoRescue is a GPL Disaster Recovery solution. It exists since 2000 and has now mature to a global solution used both to restore systemsin case of emergency as well as to deploy dozens of systems having the same or nearly the same configuration.

MondoRescue can presently restore to bare metal from media as diverse as tape, DVD, USB keys or PXE. MondoRescue supports various file systems from ext2/3 to BTFS, including xfs, reiserfs, jfs. It also fully supports mecanisms such as
LVM and HW/SW raid. Unlike most imaging tools, MondoRescue provides full flexibility in terms of changing the system layout during restore.

Built independanlty from distributions (more than 8 natively supported with multiple versions) and architectures (3 currently supported), with its PXE support, MondoRescue can deploy a large number of identical systems, or similar systems easily, bringing it far from its original goal.

It is based on mindi, small distribution making the restore environment with options such as automatic, comparing, manual modes.

MondoRescue also provides goodies such as compressor choice (gzip, bzip2, lzo), HW configuration backup (BIOS, Raid card, Management board for servers such as Proliant, ...)

Rewrite. The project's code today shows its age and its limits in term of technology evolutions. In order to support new features asked (configuration files, cloning, file system layers independence, multiple OS, ...) and get rid of an obsolete memory management code, it needs to be rewriten, keeping the good principles, but improving interfaces and coding principles (modular, adequat coding languages depending on the need, ...)
